Thanks to all those who helped make 2042 happen. For one and half days there was a crowd at Newtown Square, pasting, colouring, drawing and modelling themselves into the 2042 map BUT at Sunday lunchtime we were washed away with a deluge of 87mm of rain! The highest daily rainfall this year. In minutes, Newtown Square became a lake, which forced us to pack up and run for cover.

For all those who missed out making their mark, you can still contribute your work. Drop it off to Inner West Cultural Services, 35-39 Dickson St, Newtown. Give us a ring first 95504156 or email info@innerwestcs.org.au.

Awwwwww like any one who has ever played Sim City. Sometimes when you make a virtual city, it is subject to "Natural Disasters" Sometimes the natural disasters can be so extreme that your city is lost and your people gone.

Welcome to day 2 of 2042: Art on the Street. The map is looking great and people have already started working on it. Come and check it out and add yourself to King St!

A rundown on the day

2042 Art on the Street is developiong nicely. There are so many cool little objects being built out of plasticine. People are drawing and adding their photos to our map making their own little urban art tour of the Newtown street art.

Some people are just basking in the sun enjoying the day and some are getting really involved. Next to us are some climate change activists who are selling brownies that melt your face with deliciousness. We're two hours away from the end of our first day and there's a whole new day tomorrow. We need to get this map looking "comprehensive" and bit by bit it's getting there.

Mayor of Marrickville addresses 2042: Art on the Street

Marrickville Council is pleased to have worked with Inner West Cultural Services for this unique event, 2042: art on the street. Congratulations to Inner West Cultural Services and all the volunteers that have made this event such a success.

I believe that it is the people of Newtown and its surrounding suburbs that make the Marrickville area the best place to live in Sydney. An event like this, where our community are invited to come together and transform Newtown Square into a wonderful public artwork will demonstrate to the rest of Sydney who we are and what is important to us.

To our creative community, whether you are a painter, dancer, musician, writer or sculptor and more, we thank you for making our area the centre of Sydney’s cultural activity.

Funding 2042: art on the street is just one of Marrickville Council’s initiatives that brings the arts to our community. We also have the Chrissie Cotter Gallery for local artists to host exhibitions, an artist residency program, arts grants, a street art program and we engage many local musicians and performers at our cultural and street festivals.

WELCOME TO 2042: ART ON THE STREET

As hosts of 2042 art on the street, Inner West Cultural Services acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of the place we all now know as Newtown. We would like to pay our respects to the Cadigal elders both past & present, and we present this event in the spirit of people like the local young woman named Patyegarang who taught some of the language of the Cadigal to William Dawes, a soldier among the first fleet of British boat people. The two of them seem to have imagined a future where relations between the two peoples could be based on mutual respect; this future is still hoped for by us at IWCS and we have come a way down that road, but we are a long way from there yet. We hope this year’s 2042 art on the street will be seen as a contribution to the journey.

'Local Colour' at 2042 art on the street

2042: art on the street is happy to announce that 'Local Colour; the Newtown Colouring-in Book' by Newtown artists, Maggie Stein and Fiona Redevick, will be on sale at our information booth so don't forgot to check it out when you come to contribute to 2042: art on the street.

The book is an independent project by Stein and Redevick; a happy coincidence with 2042: art on the street, and a great publication that we would like to support. We are constantly impressed by Newtown's local talent and can't wait to see it in full swing this weekend, 24-25 October 2009.

Artwork takes shape thanks to amazing volunteers!

Over the past weeks volunteer artists have been working on the base for 2042: art on the street's collective artwork. As the map starts to take shape it will be very exciting to see how people will add to and enhance this beautiful starting off point. Pictured is the work slowly growing and some of the people who came to contribute. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed you are amazing! There are still plenty of opportunities to contribute as a volunteer or creatively on the day. Interested in being apart of a unique public art event? We are looking for volunteers and staff to help in a variety of ways.

We value your support. Your contribution will be posted on the 2042 website and you will go into the draw to receive an original and unique 2042:art on the street T’shirt.

Volunteer Positions:
1. Creative people to help straight away to help make the installation.
2. Creative Team: be on the street and help others interact with the installation during the weekend event.
3. Installers: help bumpin and bumpout - unload and set up paper carpets and props and Information booth.
4. Clean-up team: help during the pack up to make sure the site is clear.

Like to help make ‘2042: art on the street’ happen?

We are looking for creative people to help straight away to create wallpaper paste-ups.

Tasks – screen printing; cutting paper stencils; arranging and gluing shapes onto paper to create wallpaper.

Work with artists Collider and MKSHFT in a workshop environment (just off King St).
If you can spare a couple of hours or a day, every little bit helps; we’d love to hear from you!

Workshop times:
Wednesday, 7 October 11am – 5pm
Saturday, 10 October 10am – 5pm
Sunday, 11 October 10am-3pm
